A portion of the city of Cameron is located in the southeast corner of DeKalb County. Located at the intersection of I-35 and U.S. Highway 36, Cameron is known as the Crossroads of the Nation.

Cameron was founded in 1855 after a group of settlers moved the four-block town of Somerville one and a half miles southwest from its location at what is now Interstate 35 and the DeKalb-Clinton County border. The town was named in honor of Malinda Cameron, the wife of the leader of the settlers, Samuel McCorkle. From that small beginning, Cameron has grown to a population of 9,933 and serves as the hub for economic activity in the fourcounty region.

There are plenty of recreational opportunities including an 18-hole golf course, an Olympic-sized swimming pool with a 121-foot serpentine water slide, baseball and softball fields, a disc golf course, six lighted tennis courts, two sand volleyball courts, soccer fields, basketball courts, a skateboard park, picnic shelters, and large playgrounds for the kids.

During the summer, the Cameron Municipal Band performs concerts every Thursday evening at McCorkle Park. Cameron celebrates with parades on St. Patrick’s Day, Fourth of July, and Christmas.
